When she moved into the H38 East Apartments on February 7, 2020, Carole’s only income was Social Security. Unemployed and struggling financially, Carole wanted to make a change in her life.
RealAmerica partnered with Area IV to develop, build, and manage H38 East Apartments. At H38 East, the Area IV Agency on Aging and Community Action Programs, Inc. offers the Life Skills Program. The program provides a coach that works one-on-one with residents to set life goals and connect them to resources.
Carole cites the Life Skills Program as a helpful part of her residence at H38 East. She set three goals in the program: to maintain safe and affordable housing, purchase a car, and obtain employment.
“Without the Life Skills Program, I would not know about all the resources available in the community and how to access them,” Carole said. “My coach, Allie, is always available to provide me with information about resources and available opportunities.”
The Life Skills Program referred Carole to the Senior Community Service Employment Program. She completed the application and was connected with employment at Homestead Consulting Services, where she now works 28 hours per week.
“Through H38, I obtained safe and affordable housing, which enabled me to purchase a car, which in turn helped me get a job,” Carole said. “I am very happy to have been able to achieve my goals with encouragement and support from my coach, Allie, and our apartment manager, Angie. Their support made all the difference.”
